A Legacy Brought to Life
Some buildings hold more than history. They hold a feeling.
The Hatchery on Main is one of them. What began generations ago as a cornerstone of Shelby life has been reimagined for a new kind of gathering. It now welcomes people once again—new faces, same familiar warmth.
The History
At the turn of the century, two visionaries on West Main Street helped shape the spirit of Shelby.
David Cockley, Medal of Honor recipient, entrepreneur, and founder of the Shelby Steel Tube Company, built his 22-room home as a reflection of ambition and possibility. Years later, Herbert Knapp opened an ambitious poultry hatchery that brought new life to the property, infusing West Main with a sense of energy and progress. Together, they embodied the town’s quiet rhythm of innovation and care, a legacy that still lingers in the walls today.
Over time, the home passed to families who loved it well, preserving its grace through seasons of change. Each left a mark: a memory, a story, a sense of belonging that never left. What stands here now is both a tribute and a continuation, shaped by generations who understood the value of building something meant to last.
The Restoration
The Hatchery on Main is being renewed with the same care and intention that first brought it to life.
Every step of the restoration is guided by respect for the craftsmanship that came before and the character that has quietly endured through the years.
The Penwell family, the heart behind the transformation, is focused on enhancing what’s here, not replacing it. Every original detail that gives the space its soul is being carefully preserved, while thoughtful updates make it ready for today. Brick, wood, and light are being revived in ways that feel true to its story and honest to its roots. Through their care, the story of this place continues, one of time, craft, and belonging.
Great Stories Don’t End. They Evolve.
As it evolves, The Hatchery on Main is reclaiming its original purpose: bringing people together. It was built for connection, and that remains at the heart of its renewal.
Once restored, The Hatchery on Main will open its doors to the moments that bring people together: events, milestones, and meaningful connections. Rooted in legacy but built for what’s next, it’s ready to serve the community, just as it was always meant to.
